The Hour Provo exhibit stayed up at Coleman Studios longer than planned so if you made a bid in the silent auction and have been waiting to hear back I apologize.

I am extending the silent auction to December 21st, 2009!
To make a bid on a portrait email me with the following:
-the name and number of the portrait.
-how much you want to bid.
-Please tell me if you are the model or a friend or family member bidding on the portrait for the model.

Sorry, some of the later portraits have not been posted yet but I will get them up soon, likely Monday morning, December 21.

I would like to officially announce the unofficial closing reception of HOUR PROVO at Coleman Studios. The reception will be part of the Downtown Provo Gallery Stroll. All the galleries and cafes in downtown Provo will be open late for you to enjoy free art and food. Come check it out! Also, the silent auction of the Hour Provo paintings is still open. Proceeds will benefit the Provo Food and Care Coalition.

Shar and Morgan Coleman have graciously accepted the Hour Provo exhibit into their gallery, Coleman Studios. I hope you enjoy this 11"x17" poster and postcard I designed. I'm not much of a

computer-machine graphics designer.

Please come to the opening reception this Thursday!! All 50 portraits will be on display.

Six-year-olds are wiggly! Madeleine actually held pretty still for the first 20 minutes, which was very impressive. I met her mother, Bleu, at the Painted Temple in Provo. Her mom and dad own the business. They are very nice people and really love Provo. They like to support small business in Provo as much as possible. I painted Madeleine in their new location on University Pkwy. Madeleine is funny. She said she likes to paint too. She told me that she painted a flower that day at school. She ran around plenty during breaks from the portrait. She also helped me pick a color to put in the background. I like it.

Cody saw some of the other paintings from this project in Trendz Cafe and gave me a call. So I painted him. He is a musician and a very a good one at that, from what I've heard. He played a song for me out in the grass in front of Guru's Cafe after I missed the little set he played there after another set he played at a charity event in town after he sat for this portrait. He keeps busy. He has recently acquired an interesting job if you want to ask him about it. I will set a link to his music as soon as he gives me one.

Richard is a movie writer, director, actor and producer. He has been making films for at least 12 years. He owns Main Street Movie Company. The company is in an awesome old house in south Provo not too far from where I live. He loves sitting out on the porch every day. I've often seen him sitting there enjoying the weather when riding my bike. He sat in his directors chair on the porch while I painted. The porch is obviously shady. No problem though. His assistant, Krik, assisted me in setting up all the reflector panels they use in filming to bring the sun under the porch and get the lighting just right. Richards thin glasses were quite challenging.

Duane introduced himself to me at Trendz Cafe as he was looking at my paintings that are on display. I thought, great I can paint a business man. It turns out he's does and has done just about anything, including painting. He lives in Provo with his wife and four daughters and is a long time resident. I was fortunate enough to get to do this painting in part of Justin Hackworth's studio area. I like the red wall.

Ellen is a wonderful and peaceful woman. I got to go paint her portrait right in her backyard. She has animals and trees and a garden. Afterwords her kind daughter made us a great lunch. I did something crazy. I ate tomatoes. I never eat straight tomatoes. They had some huge ones plucked right from the backyard. I really liked them. Maybe I can go back there claiming I forgot a brush and get more fresh tomatoes...

My Outdoors Studio

I have painted almost every one of these portraits outside.
I am quite used to spending hours in the sun. For the person sitting for the portrait it is not always so easy. I don't really have any indoor studio space so I don't have a real great alternative. Though everyone begs me to paint them in the shade I don't like to because it's flat lighting provides little contrast and shadow shapes. The sun creates very rich color and strong shadows on the face. Friday was a very hot day so I found an almost perfect solution: my portable bicycle work stand, lights from Home Depot, and an abandoned store front in the shade. My very own studio, kind of. It worked but my light wasn't quite as rich as the sun and my shadows not quite as dark. It was nice and cool though. No sun burns.
I like the sun!

Brent is originally from Colorado. I met him in the bookstore. He is a very colorful character. I liked the Hawaiian leis he decided to wear for his portrait. He likes to read a lot. I could hardly keep him out of the book store during the many breaks we took.

Dan is an artist. He paints in oils and he paints in inks. His ink art is tattoos. You can find him at the Painted Temple in Provo. Dan stopped and talked to me on Center Street as I was painting Richard Horsley's portrait. He complimented my work. I went and checked out some of his paintings on display where he works then painted him the next day. We were lucky enough to be able to set up for this sitting indoors at the F-Stop Cafe which his wife runs. Thanks Dan.

I recently met Richard while looking for some old books. He is the owner of Pioneer Books in downtown Provo. He has been a merchant in Provo for 50 years. He is very tall and very friendly. Almost every person that walked by as I was painting him on the sidewalk knew him. Nobody walked by that he didn't have a friendly chat with. Go by and check the store out. Get an old copy of a Stienbeck classic or one of those new vampire books everyone likes. If you run into Richard be sure to tell him your last name. He will likely be able to teach all about the origins and history of your family. This painting was done in the shade which was quite challenging for me because of the flat lighting.

Rob has lived here in Provo since the 70's. For the last four years he has been a star feature at open-mike night at a local live music venue. He has come to be known as "Rockin Rob". He is very friendly. His smile, which he is well known for, can hardly be held back because he loves laughing so much. He was fun to paint. I had a hard time not laughing along with him.

Justin is a photographer here in Provo. His studio is right above Gloria's Little Italy on University Ave and Center St. I usually paint in the little tiny plaza close to his studio. He stopped one day to ask me why I am always painting right there and what I am doing. I explained the project to him and he liked it. So, I painted him. He recently did a project in which he shot photos of local mothers and daughters each day of April and called it "30 Strangers". The people he photographed did not pay a session fee. Instead, they made donations to the Center for Women and Children in Crisis. Justin is a great photographer. Go check out his work.

It was a really warm, sunny day when he sat for his painting. I think that he may have gotten a sun burn on half of his face. Sorry Lance!

I stopped Xavier and his missionary companion on the sidewalk one day as they rode on their bikes. I steeped out right in front of them. I made a painting appointment with them. Ken Stika builds beautiful handmade guitars and has owned and run the Great Salt Lake Guitar Co. on Center Street for years. We set up in the shop above the show room. Corey is the owner of the music venue, Velour, on University Avenue in downtown Provo. I wanted to paint a strait-on portrait of him but he insisted I get his awesome grey streek and bun on the back of his head. So I painted his profile. I think this was a good decision.

I met Liz at Aspiro, a wilderness/adventure therapy program where we worked together. In every photo that I took of her on the trail she looked like a pretty young Mother Theresa. She just has this glow. Well, I set her up for this portrait in some bad lighting. This is the result.

I painted Mark in front of the Nuskin building on center street. We had some window washers watching us the whole time from up above. Mark did push-ups and ran around every time we had a break. He also played music for me on his iPhone device. I met Mark at church.

Here is the very first portrait of this project. I painted her portrait under a tree in front of my house. Kristen was my neighbor across the street. She likes to cook and has shared a few great things she's cooked with me. She has since fled Utah to pursue a master's degree in Texas in family therapy. Kristen is commonly refereed to as "Gerti". A name she temporarily gave herself.
